PETRO BARRIER™ : filtration system for hydrocarbon polluted water for large volumes
The PETRO BARRIER™ is an in-ground system specifically designed to provide continuous drainage filtration with 100% retention of hydrocarbons released from transformers.
The PETRO BARRIER™ is a product designed to easily fit into your pit drains or in remote pit outlets. Designed and developed in the 1990's the PETRO BARRIER, consists of a corrugated HDPE pipe that can expand to the desired reference in diameter and depth.
The PETRO BARRIER™ is sunk or embedded vertically at the level of your low point of the polluted water drainage. The PETRO BARRIER™ is made up of 3 distinct sub-components, or chambers:
- The upper part of the PETRO BARRIER, through which the fluids (water, dielectric oils, or hydrocarbons) pass, called the inlet chamber, is made up of several filters and anti-debris pre-filters to prevent the active part of the PETRO BARRIER™ from clogging.
- The secondary chamber, or active anti-hydrocarbon filter, is made of aluminum. This cartridge acts as a hydrocarbon separator and is made of a hydrophobic and oleophilic material that saturates and solidifies when in contact with oils and hydrocarbons, but also natural or synthetic esters.
- The lower part, or evacuation chamber, recovers the clean water at the filter outlet, to evacuate it towards your EP network or directly into the environment. In fact, in all our tests for over 30 years, the water leaving the SPI filters has a hydrocarbon concentration of less than 5 ppm.
Once installed, the PETRO BARRIER™ must be covered with a special pre-filter made of steel grids and/or filter baskets to increase the water contact surface and can be covered with clean crushed stones. Each of these parts plays an important role in water filtration.
When the PETRO BARRIER™ is installed in the pit: all retention surfaces are sloped towards the area where the PETRO BARRIER™ is installed for proper drainage of rainwater. The installer must prepare the area as indicated and provide drainage holes for the barriers.
When the PETRO BARRIER™ is installed at the outlet of a remote pit (DEPOSIT type or concrete) or at the outlet of a CHICANE BLOCK to ensure that the filtration of the last traces of hydrocarbons is well treated, it can be placed in a concrete or fiberglass manhole. This way, you ensure that your sub-station, at the exit of a retention pit or a remote pit, does not release more than 5ppm of hydrocarbons into the environment
Finally, when you use the PETRO BARRIER at the outlet of a type 1 or 2 hydrocarbon separator, it ensures that in the event of a coalescing filter failure, your rainwater is treated a second time in complete safety.
